Namche Bazaar Trek. Kathmandu comforts (David 19/1 - 9.25am)

So, my 8th visit to Nepal and the Everest region. In all my previous visits, I have never flown in and out of Lukla on my booked dates. Weather has always delayed me on at least one or both of the legs! But not this trip!! We flew into Lukla on time 6 days ago, and flew out the same today. No weather, no fog, no delays, just perfect. And then throw in 5 days of brilliant weather for our trek with excellent scenery and I'm suddenly thinking of returning my treks to January and the Nepalese winter...!!! Although still minus25 at Base Camp!!

We were farewelled by our guide and porters at Lukla airport this morning, and yes there were more tears. Our news to Mingma that we are planning to look into sponsoring his daughter for higher education in Kathmandu had him turning away wiping tears, which in turn had the rest of us blubbering...!! A truly special moment.

I am right now sitting in the Kathmandu Guest House front garden cafe having a well earned cafe latte. I've had my shower and am awaiting the rest of the team to do the same and join me. (We weren't "on the nose" but there is still nothing like a hot shower after a trek in zero temps).

Given we have flown in and out of Lukla on time, we are now faced with having 6 days spare up our sleve. Some of the group have already hinted they may bring their return flights forward (not sure why anyone would be in a rush to leave Kat!), while the others may chose to head down to Pokhara for a few days. We may even run into that Annapurna mob (who after 10 days trekking WILL be on the nose!!)

Thanks again for your comments and support. There is nothing better than being in the middle of the Himalayas, huddled around a lodge heater and reading your comments aloud.

Great effort Team Namche. Why would you even think about departing Kat early. There is so much to see in and around the city. John G (Team 2014) and I (Team 2012) were talking the other day about maybe returning just to concentrate on Kathmandu itself. Enjoy the rest of your journey.

Wine. It's a mystery to me too mate. Perhaps a bit too much to absorb for the young ones. It can be a little confronting, but that's what makes it so special.

Congrats everyone and NO don't fly out early so much to do in Kathmandu or Pokhara. Buy a used Lonely Planet from the Book Shop out the front of the Guest House and just bum around town...Des and I did last year for 5 days and still left with things to see.
The Book Shop owner will buy the book back if you handle it with care at a reduced price of course.

I'm a sucker for anyone who gets emotional from their Nepal experience. Paulene pulls at my heart strings every time she pours out the tears...! You are definitely my 2nd favourite (along with Des, Louise, Suzi, John, Bill, etc etc etc.................!!!)

Hey David,
That coffee looks not bad for a pod machine.
Maybe you need to upgrade yours?

Glad you have all had a great trip.

Cheers

I can just imagine the smirk on your face Dave with your luck of the weather but I reckon there's also a sense of disbelief! No doubt you will talk those wishing to get an earlier flight into staying & enjoying what Kat has to offer. I'll just lap up the warmth here (33 today & again tomorrow). Another Well done to all & hi to those I know.

Hi Anne G
Always enjoy having you join us on our blog.
Right now sitting at Pokhara hospital awaiting diagnosis on Suzi's knee. Not looking good..!!
Not as warm as Melbourne here, but just incredibly mild nonetheless.

Say hi to Suzi and wish her all the best from Julie and I. The Nepalese doctors will probably just amputate and send her home.
