Wed 23rd Jan. Shopping around a wet Kathmandu...

Woke up this morning to the sound of rain. Something you very rarely hear this time of the year. In fact it was their first rainy day for winter. Rain normally falls during their summer/monsoon season. Have also had news that it was snowing up at Namche Bazaar (where we will be on days 2 and 3 of our trek). I actually love seeing the villages covered in snow. Weather reports are saying rain forecast for Saturday. Let’s hope they are wrong as that’s our planned departure for Lukla.

Today saw the team knock over most of their clothing preparation for the trek. Gary is showing a little concern that his bag is going to weigh over our allowed 10kg baggage allowance. He assured me it’s all the chocolate bars and snacks for Josh, Tess and Tahlia. I reckon it’s the Lomotil and toilet paper and spare jocks. Rhonda and Lauren have shopped well and both think they have everything needed. A final check tomorrow before the shops close just in case of any last minutes.

This evening we were invited to Nabin’s new establishment. A lounge bar he is involved with in Kathmandu. Gary, Josh, Tess and Tahlia decided to give it a miss and have an early night. Rhonda, Lauren and myself headed there. Live music, great food and a really good atmosphere. Out of the touristy area of Thamal and more generated towards the locals. The three of us felt somewhat under dressed in our Kathmandu street gear amongst locals very well dressed. We were back in our hotel by 9.30 and in bed by 10pm. Now that’s showing our age.

Nabin....always happy.

Great photo of Nabin.
I actually had you guys flying into Lukla on Friday..! Regardless, Friday AND Saturday are showing ordinary forecasts, so assuming there may be delays and/or cancellations, best prepare for the stress of rescheduled flights and Kathmandu airport chaos..! Get Prakash to stand his ground to ensure you don't get nudged down the queue..! And yes, can confirm it's been snowing heavily in Namche. Will make for excellent scenery. Can't wait to see your pics.
Oh, tell Gary to leave the chocolate in Kat. Plenty of chocolate available on the trek, just a little past its use-by date..!! LOL

Yes FRIDAY. Correct David. You see in Nepal it doesn’t matter what day it is .....unless you have a plane to catch. Friday and Saturday aren’t looking too good with weather but as you know it’s a waiting game. You can almost see your hair turning grey before your eyes when it comes to Lukla flights. Keeping our fingers crossed.

David may not remember, as it’s been a couple of years now since he’s been, talking of grey he’s becoming a grey nomad.

Does security still do the 2-3 pat downs when you depart from Kathmandu domestic? How things stay in your memory!

All the best with the start of the trek tomorrow, hope the weather is kind to you.
Power restrictions since you left, unable to use the washing machine, and plenty of rain so can’t hand wash and hang washing out, we will buy new jocks...

Hmm I seem to remember the exact same break down this time last year James. Must have something to do with timing and you being home, such a coincidence 😜

Good luck team, you are with a star trek leader!! Just watch if Sue starts squatting in the middle of the floor, as she has a habit of toileting in the middle of a room... Bon Bon time yeah Sue! Enjoy the trek and just relax and take it all in, as it's a magical place to be enjoyed by all...

Checking out your progress while we drive to Melbourne in 45 degrees ! Great memories of Kat and Nibin and Prakash (and Shashir and Kepa - wonder if you’ll catch up with them?). Fingers crossed for an on-time (ish) flight tomorrow. The fun is just beginning! And is this a record early start for the toilet jokes??
